Julia Creek seeks volunteer campsite hosts

The Julia Creek RV Friendly Site in far north-western outback Queensland is looking for volunteer camp hosts for 2018.

The voluntary role requires hosts to issue permits to RVs and caravans as they arrive at the site, explain the site rules, and ensure the smooth running of the free camping facility adjacent to Julia Creek.

Ballarat couple Joe and Cheryl Walshe have volunteered as camp hosts at Julia Creek three times in the past 12 months, and highly recommend it to travelling caravanners.

"The serenity is beautiful. To sit outside as the sun sets and watch the stars appear while listening to the fish jump in the creek is awesome. We also love meeting other travellers as they pass through; we have made many friends," Mr Walshe said.

The couple also organised nightly happy hours with the RV site guests during their time there.

McKinlay Shire Mayor Belinda Murphy said the Walshes embraced life in Julia Creek and she hoped they would be back in 2018, along with some new volunteer hosts,

"They do such a wonderful job and we love having them around. The tales of their adventure are testament to what a memorable outback Queensland experience camp hosting in Julia Creek is," Ms Murphy said.
