Camping holidays on the rise in NSW
As many of us are well aware, New South Wales has plenty to offer caravanners and, according to recent data, it seems the word is getting out.
New South Wales is understandably a popular destination for caravanning and camping holidays, with its long stretches of coastline, stunning wilderness areas and diverse regional touring routes to explore.
And according to the Caravan and Camping Industry Association of New South Wales (CCIA NSW), there’s been a strong return to caravanning and camping holidays in the past 12 months, with a massive 15.7 million visitor nights spent caravanning and camping in NSW during this period.
This is an increase of 16 per cent on the previous year, which CCIA NSW says reflects an overall resurgence in domestic holidays and a desire for connectedness and time out to relax with family and friends.
Tourism Research Australia’s latest National Visitor Survey (NVS) figures for the March 2016 quarter indicate domestic travellers are increasingly looking to enjoy outdoor-based activities, such as visits to botanical gardens and the beach, and bushwalking. Holidays, in particular, are driving the overall increase in domestic visitation, with Australians now taking a record 36.1 million domestic overnight holiday trips (up 9 per cent) annually.
"With an overall resurgence in domestic holidays, it’s really no surprise we are also seeing a strong demand for caravan and camping – it really is the quintessential Aussie holiday," said CCIA NSW CEO Lyndel Gray.
"NSW has recorded one of the strongest quarters of growth in the country for the caravan and camping sector, and nationally caravan and camping is the fastest growing commercial accommodation type outside of private rental accommodation.
"This is a pleasing result as our sector has worked hard to ensure it's meeting the needs of today’s visitors, with many of our holiday parks across the state providing outstanding facilities – from campsites to luxury ‘glamping’ and family sized cabins," said Ms Gray.
