Initially unveiled in 2014, Jayco’s J-Pod is now on the market and CW writer Michael Browning recently had the opportunity to have a good look over the newly released model.

Jayco’s J-Pod ready to roll
The J-Pod is a fibreglass-clad, teardrop-shaped pod, suitable for towing by most cars.

"Jayco Australia founder Gerry Ryan has very few flops on his RV CV since founding the company 40 years ago in 1975, and the J-Pod is very much Ryan’s ‘baby’," Michael said.

The J-Pod is a lightweight, teardrop-shaped hard-shell pod that can be towed by most cars.

"Rather than offer a pre-configured product, the J-Pod is a relatively blank canvas at its launch pricing of $9900 (tow-away, Vic), leaving couples, families or even trade and commercial customers to paint their own vision."

Jayco predicts that initial buyers will mostly be 30-something couples, but with the option of a large rear tent that attaches to the back of the pod, it also can fit the bill as a family camper.

"Jayco also introduced the market to the J-Pod’s commercial potential at its Melbourne launch by wrapping and equipping a customised version for celebrity barbecue chef Bob Hart to use as a mobile barbecue van. Mobile coffee and snack vehicles, pop-up shops, transport for karts and trail bikes – the list is endless. The potential for a weekday work van that converts to become a weekend camper or toy hauler is obvious," Michael said.

The J-Pod's list of standard inclusions include a galvanised steel chassis, 195 section tyres on 13in wheels, a spare wheel and jack, a fire extinguisher and two double-glazed push-out windows with inbuilt blinds and flyscreens. It has a double innerspring bed with under-bed storage area, additional ventilation provided by a roof hatch, and lighting via a 12V LED light.

And, of course, there's the growing options list which allows customers to pick and choose depending on their requirements.
