Caravan production is on the rise in Australia

Last year, 21,300 caravans and motorhomes were built in Australia – an increase of 4.4 per cent on 2013 and the second-highest amount in more than 20 years.

In the past 10 years, the numbers of RVs manufactured has grown by 26 per cent.

Caravan Industry Association of Australia (CIAA) chief executive Stuart Lamont said the RV industry was going from strength to strength.

"In the context of failed car manufacturing, it’s great to see our industry punching above its weight," Mr Lamont said.

Currently, more than 70 per cent of all caravans bought in Australia are made here and the numbers are part of a continued growth trend in caravanning and camping.

The latest National Visitors Survey by Tourism Research Australia showed caravanning and camping grew seven per cent to almost 45 million nights in 2014.

"Caravanning and camping provides the perfect backdrop for Australians to rediscover some of the great travel destinations in the world right here in our own backyard," Mr Lamont said. "The ability to reconnect with nature, spend quality time with family, and to escape the routine of an increasingly hectic lifestyle are just some of the attractions driving the current success of the industry."
