Graham Bailey and Jenette Black of Adelaide combine a keen interest in classic and vintage cars with a retro caravanning lifestyle. They are members
of the Chrysler Restorer’s Club and Graham has built a replica 1948 teardrop caravan to tow with a 1929 Desoto Roadster.

The tiny teardrop was fine for weekend trips away with the car club, but when Graham told Jenette about a 1960s Globetrotter caravan he had seen, she asked, "Can I stand up in it to get dressed?" When she heard the answer was yes, she responded with, "Why don’t we buy it?"

Bought for $500, the Adelaide-built 1965 Globetrotter caravan was certainly a bargain, especially as it came with a lot of extras that Graham subsequently sold at swap meets.

An elderly lady had owned the caravan since 1970 and kept it registered, but it had been seldom used. For many years it had been stored under a carport and Graham said one side was out in the weather and was damaged. "We just managed to save it in time, but the inside was in good condition," he said.

A lot of work went into restoring the exterior of the caravan, including replacing all the window rubbers, carefully polishing the aluminium and painting the marine-ply side walls. Jenette gave the interior, with its original Laminex and mock wood cupboards, a stylish update with dark blue curtains and red accents.
