Check out our Murray River camping tips, from the best caravan parks along the river front to how to make the most of your riverside location.

Like most RV'ers, we enjoy camping beside water. A flowing river appeals to us more than lake front still water. On our most recent trip we have been fortunate to travel along a long section of the Murray River from Robinvale to Hume Dam, and were reminded of the large number of wonderful riverfront campsites.

However, the weather was unseasonably cold and wet at times, so we looked for riverfront sites in caravan parks. We remembered a great site where we have previously stayed at Swan Hill. The Big4 Riverside Swan Hill has changed from a Top Tourist to a Big 4 since our last visit, but still has the same wonderful location with sites on the river. The park has undergone significant development in the last few years, including an impressive new amenities block and pool.

Robinvale Riverside Caravan Park

Ten years ago, we had the misfortune to blow a gear box near Robinvale, and our van was towed to Robinvale Riverside Caravan Park. How lucky we were to have such an idyllic spot to sort ourselves out before hitting the road again. We will never forget the kindness shown to us by the park owners and the Ford dealer and were very keen to return to Robinvale. Surprisingly, both businesses were still being run by the families of the people who had helped us a decade before.

The park has seen further development with more sites, but still has those wonderful lush grassy sites right on the water's edge. We spent a week there in clear warm weather and enjoyed watching the ski boats and fishermen going past. The lazy flow of the river created a perfect happy hour environment.

It has to be our favourite caravan park site beside the Murray River.

As if to reinforce our thinking, nature turned on a truly spectacular sunrise as  we had our breakfast on the morning we left.
