BLOG: CAMP SITES FOR NON-SMOKERS?
Tony Allsop wonders if there is a case for extending non-smoking zones in caravan parks.
Currently Denyse and I are at Lakeside Top Tourist Holiday Park at Ballina, NSW. While chatting to the owner, Gerald Searle, the topic of smokers came up. Specifically, he’d noticed an increase in the number of campers who didn’t like being on a site beside smokers.
Gerald already has a lakeside section of his park set aside for travellers with dogs, and another area he is considering for non-smoking travellers. This would basically be an extension of existing non-smoking zones in parks, such as around children’s play areas, camp kitchens and amenities.
Have you ever sat under your awning at happy hour, only to find that the smoke from the folks next to you went into your open windows or into your happy hour space? As reformed smokers, Denyse and I certainly notice this — maybe more than others even. There is also the situation where people invited over for happy hour start smoking, feeling that this is acceptable because it’s "outside".
Maybe barbecue facilities could be included as well. People are not supposed to smoke in food areas anyway, but an official non-smoking zone may be more effective.
At this stage Gerald is thinking of starting with about 20 non-smoking sites, but that could change depending on demand.
YOUR SAY: Would you be inclined to ask for a non-smoking site if it were available?
