MORE DISCUSSION

20 Apr 2012 |

Our family are heading up to Darwin in July, 2 adults and 2 children (ages 7 and 14). We are wondering which caravan park would suit us best. Having looked up all caravan parks within a 25km radius of the CBD and read most of the feedback comments I am still confused as to which caravan park would be the most suitable. If anyone would like to comment on their time in any of the caravan parks in Darwin or offer some suggestions I would really appreciate it. We hope to stay in Darwin for two weeks.

I have to disagree with Tony ,stayed there May 2012 placed in small site between two trees, couldn't even raise our awning completly.
The van next door was a large family van,had the same problem, jammed between two trees. When he wanted to service his toilet cassette he had to come into our awning space.(Not nice)Suggest they remove some trees and make larger sites. Also it appears that the office staff are not familiar with the size of sites in relation to your van size.We were not recommending it to other travellers!

Malak (KOA) are great caravan parks. There are 2 side by side. One for pet owners, one for others. All have ensuites if you don't have your own shower/toilet. Easy to get everywhere. Lee point is OK, too many rules, if you have a dog you have to stay in the concrete carpark. Stayed at Oasis at Virginia, jam packed with grey nomads who are very entitled and think they own the place. No place for families. Stayed at coolalinga as well, a big dusty dirt patch, lots of road noise, to far out of town. We lived up there for 2 yrs so have done the rounds.

Lee Point Caravan Park. This is where we stayed for 7 nights and we would have stayed more if time permitted. Really lovely park, big sites, shady or open. Lovely pool area, big laundry. Basically park where you want within the large site. Lots of amenity blocks. Good rates. A bit out of town but close to shopping Plaza. Will go back again. Take insect spray for all of the top end. Have a great trip. Carol

We stayed at Oasis Tourist Park, Howard Springs on main road to Darwin from Katherine direction, about 20 minutes drive from CBD. Closer to National Park activities. Major supermarket, chemist, bottle shop a couple of minutes drive down the road. Major shops at Howard Springs also. Dogs permitted, strict rules but that applies anywhere dogs are allowed. Great pool. Shady powered sites. Amenities good. Words of warning, be very careful where you fill your car. We had diesel from smaller supplier and ended up waiting over three weeks for Land Rover parts to come from Adelaide. The agent was so busy and that was another issue in getting $6000.00 repairs and replacement of fuel pumps etc. Only fill up where the truckies fill was the advice to us from then on. Also carried spare diesel for such instances when we were low in National Park areas and outback towns. Darwin is also notorious for bitey things and cans of insect spray is a must. We loved Darwin and look forward to another visit at some stage. Safe travelling. Sue

Isabel,
We always stay at the Top Tourist park, Shady Glen. It is a good park, the closest to town and the attractions, reasonably priced, although all parks there are expensive.
Some are way out of town, so take that into account.
Shady Glen should now have all park roads sealed. Sites in row 11, 12 and 13 are larger and not under the huge trees and are better.
I have reviewed this park in full in an earlier edition of Caravan World, and there is a video on the www.caravanworld.com.au website.
Cheers,
Tony Allsop
