31 Aug 2010 | Do they resist when it comes to RVs? Tell us your experiences.

In this month's edition of Caravan World magazine, Bob Eustace explains how some roadside assist policies are simply unsuitable for some RVs.

Have you ever called upon roadside assistance while travelling with a caravan or motorhome? Did you get the service you expected to receive? Tell us your experiences.

During a trip from South Australia up through the centre we had the misfortune to have a breakdown just outside Peterborough. The wheel studs on the van failed and the wheel collapsed leaving us stranded on the side of the road. Luckily we were able to get the wheel into Peterborough where the local RAA mechanic was more than helpful, quickly did the repairs, came out to where we were broken down and had us back on the road in no time. We cannot speak highly enough of his quality service.

i have travelled extensively - and as a female on my own have had nothing but great service - from sometimes unexpected quarters - both country hoesty as above with fuel, tows and tyres lent to get out of trouble as well as from nrma, racq and racwa and raa. all have been courteous and willing to help. unfortunately rules and safety regulations have now prevented many of the bush mechanic fixits that so many of us grew up withand safetry of both drivers and mechanics is now in the forefront of solutions this has resulted in more and more soulutions of having to be towed to a service centre for repairs - many of which used to be roadside fixes :) to the mnany talented mechanics that have gone to the rescue of my self and others - i thank you for your efforts and to those that say the service wasnt worth it ?? well it may have taken a while but at least they came and tried - who else could u have rung ? ghostbusters??? :)

Hello there, I have experienced roadside assistance on two occasions, one good, the other bad, bad, bad. First the good.We were in Yamkba after travelling across from Moree. It was in Moree that I filled my petrol tank (at Woolworths would you believe) only to get a load ******. The cheap fuel is not always the best fuel and when I got to Yamba my petrol pump failed. I rang RACV in Victoria and in no time flat, a mechanic from NRMA arrived and towed my car to the garage where a new pump was fitted. Great service. When the pump was pulled out, some petrol spilled in the boot. It was BLACK, THICK and very smelly and it stained my boot the same colour. The stain is there to this day. The moral of this story is to beware of Woolworths. The bad story is an inditement of lazy mechanics and possibly the people who employ them. My hand brake cable broke in Hervey bay. Nothine unusual in that. I'm sure that the same thing has happened to every one of you. The car was not road worthy so I called RACV who had a mechanic call to offer assistance and get me going again. Now I belong to RACV Total Care and have done for years so I expected reasonable treatment. The mechanic said that a spare cable would not be available for two days. My reply was to say that I was happy with that arrangement but as I had several appointments quite a distance away could he please organise a replacement vehicle for part of the time a feature much vaunted in the sales pitch. The mechanic said no to my request and said that even though my vehicle was unroadworthy, it was OK to drive as long as I did not stop on a hill and to leave it in park with the wheels turned in to the kerb. Makes you wonder whether you are getting value from these emergency organisations doesn't it? Don Ferguson.

I had a radiator explode on a landcruiser at bega called NRMA roadside assist. as through one of their stuff ups they had transferred my policy to my motorbike and was told unpolitely they wouldn't do a thing so I had to organize a tow truck for the car and caravan myself so on returning home I cancelled all my 7 insurance policies and health insurance with them that was in 2006 so to me it is a waste of money as I had payed premiums for 10 years. peter

We had a U bolt snap outside Murray Bridge inSA.
The tow truck driver was a caravan man and kept
some on the truck. He repaired the van on the side of the road and we mobile again in about 45 mins
Can't do much better than it was great.

Glad it worked for you, It didn't for us,the RACV didn't want to help, the RACQ was a disaster, after a long fight with the RACQ, they refunded what they charged,

We had a wheel bearing collapse in Kempsey NSW luckily at low speed after slowing down in town,on ringing the NRMA I was told we dont change wheel bearings but we can tow you to a garage where they can , I said what about if I pick up the Parts from Repco and your serviceman installs them, still a blunt no! ,So I went and bought the parts and installed them myself on the side of the road.

I had a blow out on an inner tyre on our Motorhome. I have never changed an inner before so I was a bit reluctant. We rang Winnebago RV help (which is their roadside assist program) We were not members but they were all to happy to help. They asked for our location, which was about 20km's out of Saint Arnaud in Vic. and our contact details. They had the local tyre guy call us to confirm where we were and he has on his way inside of 20 minutes. The tyre guy was very good and instructed me on the correct method to change the inner tyres. We also joined the Winnebago RV assist scheme the following month.

I guess we have been lucky in 25 plus years of caravanning (touch wood) we have not called a roadside assistance compamy such as RACV etc but would like to relay a story of assistance just outside of Gympie some years ago we ran out of petrol as we approached a gang of road side workers (probably council workers) after speaking to them one of the guys offered his spare can of petrol for us to get to the town where we could fill up. The guy asked if we would refill his can and leave at the petrol station for him to get later which of course we did.
Guess thats country honesty for you.

Hi. I was 75ks from home towing a 19'6" van when the transmission decided to empty its oil on the roadside at 4:40 pm. We called road side assistanceand they towed the car to A.T.S. Luckly my son-in-law came to the rescue of us, the dogs and the van. Glen D.

We have a Caravan & had the suspension collapse. We contacted the RACV & they sent a truck to take the van back to Broome. The same year we lost a wheel on our Cruiser, again the RACV took the car on the truck & dropped off a vehicle for us to tow the van to a Caravan Park they had arranged in Karratha. We were very happy with the service provided.
