30 Jul 2009 | What has or hasn't worked for you?

In the September edition of Caravan World with Motorhome World magazine, issue #469, towing expert Philip Lord notes that exhaust modifications can be very good or very bad for towing vehicles.

What have you found? What has or hasn’t worked for you?

"Engine management computers, aka engine control units (ECUs), are a rich area for engine improvements. Don't buy one on eBay, though: go through a reputable company, preferably one that specialises in the modification and has dyno charts to show you the actual gains in power and torque for your vehicle before and after," writes Philip.

i put a 2.5inch exhaust with a truck muffler on my 1997 mazda bravo diesel and have found that the after market safari turbo now has almost instant response to the throttle where as before the turbo was very slow to respond to throttle movement i also extended length of the sides and top on the turbo snorkel scoop as well this is helping to force a lot more air into the intake at lower road speeds also giving the engine better power as well

Diesels respond better to exhaust improvements very well. Any flow increase will deliver benefits due to less resistance on the exhaust stroke of each cylinder yet not affect fueling as fuel is added at combustion.
Diesel is the most efficient way to go.
