02 Jun 2009 | Is it harder to find camp sites in Australia's capital cities? Is it a concern?

In the August issue of Caravan World magazine with Motorhome World, field editor Malcolm Street expresses concern for the dwindling number of sites available to RVers within striking distance of Australia’s capital cities – have you found this to be the case? What do you think?

"Not so long ago, Street Talk was in a caravan park not far from the CBD of a capital city. Long-time RVers will know that parks close to a city’s centre are becoming increasingly rare.

"The park manager said that one of the assets of the park in question was that it was very convenient for getting quickly and easily to the CBD – and it was. On site, there was a considerable number of cabins of various standards, but there were still quite a few campsites available. About two minutes later, in the same conversation, the manager was proudly pointing out plans to considerably increase the already extensive range of cabins.

"I wondered, just how much longer will this ‘close’ feature be available to RVers?”

Read Malcolm’s full column in the next edition of Caravan World with Motorhome World magazine, on sale June 10, 2009.

As a traveller who pays for camp sites. I notice that a great number of people want "free camps". They do not realize that someone has to pay eventually. ie..those of us who pay rates and taxes.. This in turn puts a lot of businesses "Out of business". I live in Darwin where" free "campers park overnight in our CBD carparks, they also leave all their human waste behind, which is totally unacceptable. My suggestion is that if they cannot afford to pay for a site which provides ammenities they should not be on the road in the first place... It is not difficult to find a site for a motorhome or caravan in DArwin and surrounds... I travel along the Stuart highway regularly..which is now known as the toilet paper trail. The tourists leave a disgusting mess of toilet paper and human excriment in the "free" rest areas.. Its about time we had a levy, due to the huge workload for councils to clean up the filth... Territorian..

I cant believe the total lack of caravan parks near Capital Cities. I am on my first trip around Australia and am flabbergasted at this problem. Brisbane was one of the worst I have come accross. It lists in the parks guide books approx. 12-15 caravan parks but when you actually get there they are all Aboriginal residential Parks and do not allow tourists only residents of brisbane for long term stays. Then WHY!!! advertise in a tourist magazine!!!!! Can some body get these parks out of these tourist reference books PLEASE!!!!!!!!
