09 Apr 2009 | How will changed bag limits in Qld affect you?

In his Fish ’n’ Tips column in the May issue of Caravan World, Steve Farmer discusses changes to fishing bag limits in Qld.

“The Qld Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries made a few changes to the state’s recreational fishing regulations early this year, and quite a few Qld species, both tidal and coral reef fin fish, are now protected by bag limits as well as revised legal sizes,” he wrote.

“Personally, I think bag limits, provided they are reasonable, are a positive step towards at least slowing the decline of our fisheries and sharing the resource. However, I know these new bag limits won’t be popular with a small percentage of travelling fishos. These are the freezer and air-freight brigade – travellers who gauge the success of their winter escape by the amount of fish fillet they can air-freight or cart home in their portable freezers. The problem for these folk is that the bag limits are ‘in possession’ limits, which means that you are only allowed 30 whiting in your possession (including those in the caravan or home freezer) at any time. You cannot catch 30 today, 30 tomorrow and 30 the day after, unless you eat 30 whiting for dinner every night.

“Bag limits on some (but not all) other species include 30 for bream, five for dusky flathead and five for other flathead species combined, five for mangrove Jack, five each for grey and spotted mackerel, 10 each for school and shark mackerel, three for Spanish mackerel and 20 for tailor.”

Bag limits are great and should be kept small BUT possession limits should be higher allowing at least some fish to be taken home. It is expensive to set up for fishing so some allowance should be made in this regard. I do not agree to fishos taking massive amounts of fish however.

Bag limits are great and should be enforced but it makes my blood boil to see certain people allowed to use gill nets in the Tweed river,Qld,without any limit at all.

I think bag limits are great!! Why destroy what we came to enjoy. Areas have been fished out due to greedy fisherman with the little freezer in tow. Fishing every day to take south to sell at the local bowls club in 500g packs. This was a huge problem with southerners who fished the Hervey Bay region for the winter whiting in the last decade. They were not happy until they caught around 300 per day.. now there is not a fish to be caught in these waters...

Only those who are greedy or uncaring would object to these limits. Lets all ensure sufficient stocks are left for our future generations so they too can experience the joy of this great recreational pursuit. The concept of an Australia wide permit scheme is worthy of serious consideration by our Regulators.

My wife just said that bag limits will not affect me, because I never catch anything anyway LOL??? Personally, I think we need to have an Australia wide permit scheme which would aim at educating all fisherman about the local laws in all areas and have everybody who fishes registered in one place. As we travel across all states, it is difficult to know what the different regulations are and expensive to be licenced in every state, especially when you realise that I can only fish in one state at a time :-) I feel it should be like drivers licences, register where you live and you are OK to fish in all states of Australia. Reciprocal rights should apply !!!

Fishery inspectors should check out caravan annexes for freezes full of fish at Miara caravan park, during the influx of fisherman from southern states.
